1. Nintendo
He is “the king of the wackos” but actually he kindly replied to all my PMs regarding htaccess and mod_rewrite, why would anyone want to do this for free? No idea, that’s why he’s right on top.

2. Cheap SEO Services
I’ve had Cheap SEO Services in my MSN list for a while now, asking for a bit of advice, he gave it when needed but most of all he’s number two because simply everyone on DP recognizes his SEO skills which simply pwn!

3. Tearabite
I have an interview with Tearabite on my blog, mostly he’s on the forum with information and his website. Grownupgeek.com is his favorite+ website, I bet!

4. Buffalo
Buffalo.. is a girl! I’m serious about this one, had a laugh myself because of the nickname. Anyway, she’s active and she’s well respected on the forum.

5. Wisdomtool
He’s there for you on the digitalpoint forums, recently a moderator as far as I know. He’s there to help you out if you’re in trouble, business, marketing, anything he knows..

6. Jayshah
I’ve met Jay in my attempt to get a new sponsorship for a VPS. I had to pay for the VPS though, lower than most and that made me quite happy. Anyway we discussed on MSN about hosting, programming, web industry so he’s really a great guy and I always have a nice chat with. Consider this my personal pick, but it’s worth being in the top, I guarantee. He’s very skilled with hosting and all it’s server-side derivates.

7. Smyrl
Smyrl is a respected member on DigitalPoint, after asking around who you think will make it to the top, quite a few people yelled Smyrl. She’s (*Okay, I admit, I said He in the first place, but why are all the nice people girls, in my point of view*) a Zend certified engineer, I remember her (*again*) well in the PHP section of the website.

8. Deluxdon
He got recommended by many people on the thread, so I’m going to give him a well earned place in this top. It seems like Deluxdon pimps the blog world!

9. Getjimmy
A very active forum member, recommended by quite a few on the thread. He has over 14,000 posts so all my appreciation.

10. Davcheong
For being the first member to recommend a top 10 on DigitalPoint forums with a nice list, description included. Many other lists followed but he was the first so I’m giving him the 10th place on my list.

Today I’ve experienced a great feeling of joy. At my university we had a microsoft conference called Entrepreneurship forum, the 2nd edition. I’ve joined mostly to hang out with my current collegues from DaAfaceri - a student business organization, pretty neat one! - and to get to sign a partnership contract of any sort with Microsoft.

The amphiteatre was full, I’ve never seen that much crowd at any conference, and yesterday I also attended a conferece about the stock market. I was pretty surprized to see Microsoft’s Chief Operations Officer, Kevin Turner, speaking to the crowd. He pointed out basic things about Microsoft, what’s new to come, what’s microsoft investing in, and yes, they are number 1 for research and development with a buget of over $8 billion dollars.

I have to admit, I was impressed even with the free Mc Donalds meal they offered for us at the end of the conference, they were sure we are hungry and yes we were!

I recommend everyone to attend conferences of any kind, you learn more than you can imagine and you meet people that might help you succeed, no matter what your goals are.

Currently, I’m trying my best to get an interview with Kevin, so cross the fingers as I’m going to ask more about the online advertising than anyone.

U.S is in a full economic crisis and E.U is as well, so people tend to save money instead invest them in … anything pretty much and it affected the web industry as well.

I’m NOT a domainer, as I don’t have over 1000 domain names, but I’ve had the oportunity to register quite a few nice .me domains when they released the registration for the public and right now I’m stuck with selling cheap or struggle and wait.

Big fishes such as domainers with a good portfolio - check this out and you’ll find some - are starting to mass-buy domain names from those who are smaller but grabbed better names.

For instance, I see domains such as commands.com to be sold at $8k USD on SitePoint marketplace and it definitely has a bigger value. The thing is, domainers tend also to group out with development teams, thus developing the domain names and raising the value. I do the development on my own and believe me, it’s not such a fast process.

Online domain consultants have personally given me the advice of buying domain names in bulk right now, it’s the perfect time to grab them at a low price and sell them in a few years for the correct one. It’s like the real estate market except it’s for the virtual world. Obviously I’m talking about the domain aftermarket, there’s no sense in buying new domain names, the prices are the same for reg fees.

So what does a small domain portfolio owner like me do right now? Stop selling! I’ll sell at a low price for sure and I’m pretty confident it’s worth more than what I’ve been offered up to now.

I’ve started creating my small portfolio website, with 0 aesthetics, at labs.scorpiono.com - you’ll see my portfolio there, and soon cv.scorpiono.com for my online curriculum vitae.

Registering domain names isn’t rocket science, but like all the normal things that run online there are several tricks that make a BIG difference in your budget or overall satisfaction on the purchase. You’ll understand this easily, I guarantee you, don’t get fooled by fancy names because my grand dad is registering domains names as we speak after several advices he recieved from me.

This guide will teach you:

- How to pick the perfect name for your domain.

- How to chose between dot com, dot net, dot org, dot me, you get the point.

- How to make the best choice when it comes to the price for domain names.

- How to setup your domain name to point to the proper name server.

Video tutorial - A complete basic guide on buying and setting domain names from GoDaddy.com

The video tutorial on how to register a domain name will cover everything, just make sure you understand the terminology:

The registrar is the company where you can buy your domain name from.

Examples: GoDaddy.com (recommended), Name.com, Register.com

Clicking the following banner will keep the current page active:

The domain name must be available to register, meaning that you are the first one to request the registration, therefor if someone else has registered the domain name you want the only way to have it is by negociating with the owner and buying the domain name, usually it’s more expensive but for now let’s just learn how to register domain names.

The name server represents the IP address of the server provided by your hosting company. In order to have a website, you need to have a server that will host your files and a server that points the domain name correctly. It’s always provided by the hosting company, for example GoDaddy has hosting services as well as domain name registration services and the easiest way is to register your name over there. It’s not a big deal, believe me, all you have to do is complete a form where you enter the IP digits.

Step 1: How to pick the perfect name for your domain.

There a are few questions you have to answer yourself before knowing what to pick.

Is it a blog you want to create? Most blogs tend to have the author’s name in it: JohnChow.com or blog at the end of the name: JohnDoeblog.com

Is it a firm you want to create? You must brand it so naming it might be a bit difficult, if you already have a company name, go for: companyname.com - if it’s taken, I normally pick what GoDaddy variations offer me.

Is it a non-formal website? You can go for: Snikerz.com or youcanlove.me - (.com) is not the only TLD you can register.

Got a name? Shouldn’t be that hard to pick it, the above advices might help you but you should go with whatever you have in your mind that sounds succesful as I like to say.

Step 2: How to chose between dot com, dot net, dot org, dot me, you get the point.

.com - This is the most used domain name, it comes from “commercial” and most of the good names are already taken. You should know that based on a study, most of the web surfers check the brand of a firm, or website by typing .com at the end if they don’t know the extension, this says something, I suggest you go for it.

.net - This is the domain for “network” and nowdays social networks are using it more often. It’s also the best alternative if dot com is taken.

.info - This is the domain name for “information” and it’s the cheapest domain name at GoDaddy, I think it’s 1.99$/yr and it’s most used for informational websites about a specific theme. Ex: audicars.info

.me - This is a 2008 new TLD, people use it for blogs or anything personal, stands for ME as in -you- so it’s a good TLD for a blog. You do have to register it for minimum 2 yrs and it’s a bit expensive.

Step 3: How to make the best choice when it comes to the price for domain names.

There are a couple of things you need to know, first of all the .com is 9.99$/yr and the .net as well - .info is 1.99$/yr and .me is aprox 30$/2yrs.

Coupon codes - GoDaddy 2008 - yes I’ll even help you get better prices:

Coupon code

Description

SCAM3 (recommended)

Any .com domain at 7.45$/yr

OYH3

$2.50 off / $7.45 any .COM (renewals too… just used it)

BTPS7

20% any order of $50 or more

BTPS255

25% off any order of $100 or more

OYH1

10% off whatever

OYH2

$5 off a $30 purchase

BTPS50

50% off .co.uk domains

BTPS4

10% off anything

chill1

10% off

chill2

$5 off $30

chill3

$7.45 .coms

hash1

10% off

hash2

$5 off $30

hash3

$7.45 .com registration

gdd1101c

10% off any order of $40 or more

Step 4: How to setup your domain name to point to the proper name server.

You have 2 options on this one:

Option 1: Buy hosting from GoDaddy - you simply click “Add hosting plan” and pay for hosting on GoDaddy and do absolutely nothing.

Option 2: Go to your domain name and click “Name servers” - you should use the servers provided by your hosting company. They usually look like this: ns1.scorpiono.com ns2.scorpiono.com - After this you should wait for it to propagate through out the internet. It usually takes a max 24h to make your website available for each computer world wide.
