Convince yourself why my VPS Hosting rocks anything else!

Web hosting, uhm.. I think that in order to get yourself the best package, you either need to burn yourself a few times with different companies (*ouch, that’s me*) or get informed from notorious blogs/websites on the web.

I’ll show you, how to compare properly and how to chose a good host, and I’ll present my own case study, as I can’t seem to find anything better on the web than PulseInternet’s VPS Hosting. *At least not yet*

Free hosting

» I’ve started like this back in November 2006, I had my main website which is (mylol) hosted by a friend from UK for free. He had an ISP and oh well, I was a freebie junkie back then.

» You can’t have any requests for upgrade when you get hosted for free. You can’t ask for more.. and if you’re business demands it, you are stuck.

» You don’t have control over the server, you can get yourself removed anytime as it’s no obligation into hosting you *You don’t pay, you’re doomed!*

» Scared already of free hosting? Well.. you pay $0 USD, isn’t that great?

Web hosting (shared from Hostgator)

» On september 2007, I’ve switched to Hostgator, I’ve agreed to pay $10 USD per month for an incredible offer of 600 GB HDD, 6 TB Bandwidth traffic, etc..etc..

» So thrilled, 1 month passed, website got pulled off and suspended, luckily I was vigilent, noticed and emailed the HostGator support. I’ve passed the mail send limit. *What mail send limit? Isn’t this suppose to be Godlike hosting?* No!

» I’ve then managed to set site up, but never send newsletters to my users (I had about 6000 back then) - ouch! Can’t promote stuff, can’t make more money, half-doomed again!

» After the incident I decided to take a deep look into their TOS and search for “limitations”. Well basically, HostGator could have banned me at any time, and never refund, because of hidden limitations such as RAM usage, CPU usage and many other which I couldn’t basically control. I’ve paid for 6 TB of traffic, should hold a great site huh? That’s what I thought in the first place, but such hidden limitations could have exploited me so easily.

» You can check their plans: http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml

VPS Web Hosting - Quad Core
(4×2.4Ghz Intel Cores with 8GB RAM)

- PulseInternet.co.uk -

» HostGator gave me a sour taste, I was actively looking on digitalpoint forums for a new hosting company, I wanted a VPS or a Dedicated server, I had to analyze the cost/effect to determine what to purchase.

» Jamie (PulseInternet support) contacted my via MSN, after he was reading a post of mine on DigitalPoint, telling me exactly what was about to shock me a few weeks later. PulseInternet is selling the best VPS servers you can find around *oh really?* - so what happend next? He told me he was looking for a big website, such as (mylol.net) to sponorship it. I wasn’t making more than $300/mo, but even if he didn’t want to be my sponsor, I would have bought a server, at least for few months to see how it goes.

» That being said, I told Jamie that the main issue is transfering the 15,000+ photos from my current host to his, and that there are several things to take care, such as gd library, php configuration on max_post_size etc..

» On 16 march 2008, I took (mylol.net) into maintainance mode (users couldn’t upload photos/modify profiles) and was expecting a half-day downtime, as there were 8 databases to transfer, and many several other domains, also setting up mylol is a pain itself.

» It took them 8 minutes to download from Hostgator, upload, create my NS, switch the domains, everything.
*woot?!* They did everything this fast? It’s called Mike, and it’s the tech support chief, he was the one working with Jamie to set everything perfect, as fast as possible. Worked like a charm.

» Okay, now, time to configure the WHM panel and play around, I had a permanent 3 hour assistance into swapping files from one account to another, modify some data in several databases, and everything else needed to optimize the Scorpiono.com network.

» I congratulated them, and well, I’m such a freebie junkie, it’s deep inside my blood, I kindly asked Jamie if he can make me an affiliate for PulseInternet as I knew that with such services I might make a few bucks as well.

» He agreed, set me up, and.. *woot!woot!* gave me a coupon code for VPS servers, for 20% off! - continue reading..
